Reading Pathways Valentine De Landro Valentine De Landro will be speaking at Book Riot Live 2016, November 12 and 13 in New York City. Valentine De Landro is an illustrator, artist, and designer who has been working in comics for years, creating art for superhero comic books with Marvel and DC, other licensed properties like Buffy: the Vampire Slayer, and now his own creator-owned comic with Kelly Sue DeConnick. Cover by Valentine De Landro I first discovered De Landro through Bitch Planet, the feminist sci-fi prison colony series he co-created with Kelly Sue DeConnick in 2014, and I would recommend you start there. Bitch Planet tells the story of several women deemed “non-compliant” by the government, sent to be rehabilitated on the Auxiliary Compliance Outpost Bitch Planet, as it were. Bitch Planet houses thieves and murderers, but also women who just don’t fit within the patriarchal system. Women who don’t accept being cheated on by their husbands. Who are fat. Who talk back. Who stand up for themselves. In issue 4 one of the inmates, Kam, is looking through the files of her fellow non-compliant women and many of their crimes I’d be proud to commit: political incitement, development and distribution of gender propaganda, criminal literacy… De Landro’s art is essential to the comic, contributing enormously to the exploitation/grindhouse movie feel. He honestly depicts women’s bodies, bodies with shape s we rarely get to see in any media, and does it without shame or sexualization. Start with the first trade paperback, Bitch Planet Volume 1: Extraordinary Machine, but it’s worth picking up individual issues as well, which come with bonus feminist essays not included in the trade. After that, check out De Landros run on Marvel Knights 4, starting with issue 19 (collected in Marvel Knights Fantastic Four, Vol. 4: Impossible Things Happen Every Day). Its the beginning of a short arc about the Inhumans, who you may be familiar with from Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tv show. Even if youre not, there is enough exposition for a newbie to jump on board. This series, focusing on the Fantastic 4, continues the sci-fi tone from Bitch Planet and is a great jumping on point for De Landros superhero work. I could stare at his drawings of the Thing for hours. For more superhero comics, try X-Factor. De Landro penciled many issues of this Marvel comic about a detective agency for mutants, but Id recommend starting with issue 39 (collected in X-Factor Vol. 7: Time and a Half). It works well as a standalone story, answering the question “Whats it like when mutants have babies?” De Landro’s art conveys both the wonder and the horror of becoming a parent, and may make you cry. Lastly, read the Adventures of Superman #17, another collaboration with Kelly Sue DeConnick. Adventures of Superman was a digital-first anthology series published from 2013-2014. It contains stories written and illustrated by various people, published online first in chapters containing one story each. De Landro and DeConnick’s story was published in chapter 50, collected in issue #17. It’s a cute romance between Lois Lane and Superman as they get and give each other presents for Valentine’s Day. It’s as witty as any DeConnick comic, and De Landro’s art expertly conveys Lois and Clark’s emotions through sparse linework. These men in the early period of Heian went to Tang Dynasty China, and when they came back to Japan, they came back with religious system of Esoteric Buddhism.They brought this religion by first bringing all the religious scriptures, which are known as sutras' in written form. Later they brought lots of paintings and charts that were related to the religion. At last, they brought all the rituals objects needed for religious ceremonies. The ritual objects were modeled after those brought back to China by Kukai and Saicho. The writer used the formal style in writing the book. The author uses convincing language that attracts the attention of the readers. The persuasive language is seen when he elaborates the traditions of Buddhist. The ritual objects included Kongo Vajra, which means thunderbolt. It was held in the hands of practitioners to signify that they were protected from the evil. The professionals used this bell to call their relevant Buddhists gods. When they finished, they used the bell to send back the Buddha gods. The most commonly used bell during ceremonies was the five-pronged bell. A combination of a bell and a Vajra formed a set that was placed on Kongo tray on the altar ahead of practitioners. However there five handles on Kongo bell, which constituted, Buddhist Stupa, Buddhist jewel, five sprong, three sprong and one sprong. These objects were placed at the center where training occurred. There were also influential to people who led in the practice and worship. These priests also led people to low mountains to worship gods.According to Faure, people used these symbols to worship up to know. These mythological an d ritual influences affected not only the religion but also politics, artistic and literary sphere. People changed from their normal activities and tried to implement the Buddha's principles. People turned from their beliefs. This led to a large mass of individuals migrating into the religion. Philosophy is the careful study if the states of, validity, existence, and conduct. It comes from the Greek word, philosophia, which translates into â€Å"the love of wisdom†. Philosophy encompasses a vast range of topics and ever person, place, thing, and idea has its roots embedded in it. For the purpose of this paper, I will be only covering the branches of epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics. These branches serve as the building blocks for studying and teaching philosophy. While examining these building blocks, I will argue why philosophy should be studied. Everything I know was told to me by someone else and that person was also told everything that she or she knows by someone else. Freedman) In both tragedy and comedy, conflict between male and female characters can often be found at the crux of the theatrical narrative. In plays that present on-stage opposition between men and women, it can be perceived that a typical set narrative structure is followed: the actions performed by male characters incite women to castoff the role of passivity and impose their presence on stage . As a result of lapsing into a masculine mode of behaviour, the females’ traditional archetype is then left to be fulfilled by the male characters. In comedy, such sexual role reversals are found aplenty, emphasised and made comic by cross-dressing whilst in tragedy, it appears rarer. Furthermore, in tragedy the role reversal focuses on the women’s function as usurping the roles designated for male characters. What did those times have in common? Both periods were extremely evil in the sight of the Lord. Both had only a handful â€Å"righteous† people. Both had clueless societies that mocked the idea that judgment was coming. Both had unions between persons that God considered an abomination. Sodom was steeped in perverted sexual behavior, including homosexuality. I suspect that even in Noah’s day, those unrighteous unions involved similar activity.
